Lady Gaga models for Elle

When I saw Lady Gaga was on the cover of Elle I was expecting something different. I’m so used to seeing her look like Lady Gaga. You know… very edgy, very avant-garde.
Although this look isn’t entirely new for her, I was expecting something more over the top.
Its nice to see the art director decided to go with a glamour look for her on the cover. It shows she can pull off different looks and isn’t confined to just a few styles. Keep this in mind when working on your own model portfolio. Show that you’re capable of doing different looks. Its ok to surprise people.

A play or a really cool Photo Shoot? You Decide.

So we start off with Ursula the sea witch. She combats and beats poor Ariel. But wait, King Neptune shows up and the battle ensues. The two have an epic battle and yada, yada, yada…

A play? This sounds more like a photo shoot. Custom designing a wardrobe for this is an epic in and of itself.

Photographing Ursula, Ariel and Neptune = loads of work. However, if I had to photograph all three of them at once and on short notice, I’d go more ethereal. The wardrobe on the light side. I don’t even want to get started on makeup and hair. We could go so many different ways on fantasy makeup and hair and still have a beautiful portfolio piece.

Now, If I got to shoot the Sea Witch Ursula by herself, it could be the making of a nice model portfolio piece.

You could still go light on the wardrobe but I’d prefer something elaborate…. Yes, very elaborate.

Great shoes to wear for your model portfolio shoot

I love these Alexander McQueen Titanic Ballerina Pumps. I could see them used for a model portfolio using blue and green makeup and a black dress. The hairstyle could be done several ways. Maybe something that’s all teased out. White or platinum blond hair extensions. Definitely something Avant-garde though. The shoes need to be lighted correctly so they don’t get lost in the shot so one way is to photograph them against a low key (dark background). I did a shoot in an old filthy, real sooty warehouse. What a great location! The model was wearing silver high heels for one of her model portfolio pieces. I could see her having worn these shoes. There was a nice juxtaposition
between the early 1900’s interior of the warehouse and her
Rihanna inspired wardrobe. Definitely worth getting dirty for:)

Magazine shoot

I’m back to tell you about another previous event, now that we’re getting the blog caught up and put the video on youtube. A few more post and we’ll be working with current events:) Ok maybe more than just a few. Bella Sin was featured in Nude Freitags Magazine for the month of March 2009. It was the first time I worked with her. She contacted me and said she was going to be in the magazine so my personal challenge was to photograph a bondage/fetish gothic theme, but I wanted to imply more and show less. I usually don’t have girls model and do their own makeup at a shoot. If they’re modeling I like them to relax and let someone else get them ready. We all could use a little more pampering. Since Bella is a professional makeup artist, we thought it would be great for her to be in the magazine and be the makeup artist to show off her skills. Then the big bonus for for me (that was really a surprise), I was interviewed by the magazine and they printed the interview. So I would say the month of March 2009 was pretty exciting

Fantasy makeup artistry at Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Greetings all . Today’s post is on the fantasy makeup from Viva La Rock. Just a bit of an update for those of you that just joined me. Last month I was fortunate enough to get to shoot a VIP event at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame called Viva La Rock. One word……AWESOME!! It is rare for me to go on location to shoot, the studio is the place for me. What a special pleasure to work with Elle from Spell Cosmetics again , thank you to Elle for the opportunity. Watching Elle in action applying makeup, is like watching a fine art painter creating a masterpiece. There was also another special guest at the Rock Hall, Makeup Geek, what a pleasure to meet her and see her work in person. Makeup Geek has amazing technique and really turned the model’s face into a canvas before applying wonderful layers of color. One of the highlights of the evening was a fantasy makeup theme “butterfly girl”. It was the job of the makeup artists to tie in the fantasy makeup to the headpiece so the overall butterfly theme would come together. They did a wonderful job. Elle created the butterflies on the model’s arms and chest and Makeup Geek transformed the model’s face into that of a beautiful butterfly. Fresh Hair Salon did the hairstyling and top all that off with a beautiful headpiece from Something New Florist and a masterpiece you have made! I’ve shot several fantasy makeup themes in the studio but this was the first butterfly for me. Another fantasy makeup theme at Viva La Rock was for “Merman”, but he couldn’t make it to the event. I would’ve loved to have taken those pictures.

The shooting situation in this particular venue was challenging. It was a very small back stage room, with an extremely high ceiling (difficult to bounce light off of it) and little room to work. There was a huge conference table that literally took up half the room and was surrounded by hairstylists, makeup artists, models, event coordinators, a florist and me with my gear.

I started out using the camera flash as usual and then a ray of sunlight fell across the room. There was an amazing skylight in the ceiling, a BIG one. So I immediately switched to a higher film speed and started working with the available light. This created a more dynamic, “in the moment” feeling to the images. They now exhibited a three dimensional quality and a feeling of movement. It gives the feeling of being there.

The experience was great! Show girls and butterflies, Fresh Hair guys and girls, makeup artist and hair stylists, that’s the place for me!!!

I hope you get some ideas for your own fantasy makeup theme from these talented artists.

I’ll be posting more from the event but this was done so I wanted to get it out to you.
